5 Alternatives to Shorts, The 2019 Edition

I used to think I was the only woman who hated wearing shorts. And then I started writing this blog annually. From the positive reaction we receive every year, I know I am far from the only woman looking for an alternative to shorts.

I never understood how other women could be wearing shorts so un-self-consciously. It is rare that I have time to exercise enough to actually like my legs above the knee. Even when I was younger, thinner, and more fashionable, shorts just felt so casual and not me. They’ve never really been my preferred mode of clothing in the summer. So what do you wear instead? And what do you wear when it is super hot and you kind of have no choice? Well, look no further. As always, RLS is here to help.

Skorts

The skort has shed its formerly dorky reputation and has turned into a pretty cool item. I especially like it as a summer athleisure option. The skort is more dressed up than shorts yet can still be sporty and functional. We sell a lot of Athleta skorts to our clients who are interested in this shorts alternative.

Skirts

My favorite alternative to shorts standby has always been a skirt. There were a few years when the kids were very little that skirts were harder to pull off (hello skort!), but now that they don’t need me to go down the slide with them, I am back in skirts at the park on the weekend. Pro tip: You can take any formerly dressy skirt and dress it down by wearing it with a tee shirt! One of my favorite tricks to save a piece of clothing from the landfill is by changing it’s category. And do you know which skirt shape and length is most flattering on you? A soft a-line is universally flattering on most body shapes if you aren’t sure. I love the longer length skirts for being able to sit on the floor and hide your legs!

Dresses

An easy dress is never the wrong decision and can make getting dressed on the weekend a snap. Add a cute sandal and accessories and go. This Persifor dress comes in solid colors and prints and is a client favorite from Tuckernuck. A cotton tee or tank dress like the one below from Everlane is a great basic everyone should have. I’ve had a few from H&M that lasted for years. I finally retired and replaced them this year with fancy versions from the boutique Upstairs on Seventh. I haven’t tried it on yet but I’m super obsessed with the Uniqlo cotton modal tank dress as a summer basic.

Linen Pants

Linen pants are an elegant, lightweight alternative to shorts. They can be casual or dressy, depending upon how much you iron them and the silhouette, and are a classic which will last for years. The new wide leg versions like the ones from Caslon and Reformation are especially breezy. The skinny leg versions like this one from J. Jill especially chic. The Athleta Jogger is an absolute summer staple if you truly don’t wear shorts.

Wide Leg Pants

Wide leg pants are without a question my favorite pant silhouette right now. The skinny revolt has been on for years in my closet. I even have cropped, wide leg jeans! The Athleta crop pant below is PERFECTION: lightweight, chic, wash and wear, travel-friendly. Everyone should have a pair. I know, the wide leg silhouette seems so weird and scary at first but I guarantee it will make you feel so new and exciting and chic once you try it.

Shorts

Yes, this is an alternative to shorts blog and we have shorts in it. Why? Because sometimes shorts are the most practical thing to wear and so we wanted to show you the options that have worked the best for both ourselves and our clients. Kyle and my personal favorite is the Uniqlo Linen Cotton Relaxed short. We wear the same size because she prefers to wear it more relaxed and baggy and I prefer them more streamlined. However, we have both used her life-changing trick of using a seam ripper to undo the tacked up roll at the bottom of the shorts, which essentially makes them just above the knee! Brilliant.
