5 Alternatives to Shorts, The 2020 Edition

Most people live in shorts in the summer, especially on the weekend or with kids. So what do you wear if you don’t feel comfortable in shorts and every day is a weekend? Although this blog is highly anticipated every year, it feels even more important this season!

The idea behind shorts is that you can be cool, comfortable, and chase after the kids or the dog with ease. Here are 5 Real Life Style endorsed alternatives to shorts for summer 2020.

Happy Shopping!

Linen Pants

Linen pants are the best option for those looking to cover up more but still look and feel both stylish, and dare I say, a bit elegant. Just be sure you are buying a style you can wash on cold, hang up to dry, and wear a bit wrinkled. Now is not the time for dry clean only linen pants. An elastic waist is a good hint that you are in the right place.

Rails Graham Cropped Pants, $66

American Giant Linen Pants, $104

Paige Solynne Pants, $209

Kut from the Kloth Gaerwen Casual Ankle Pant, $68

Calson Linnen Jogger Pants, $59

NYDJ Trouser Pants, $119

Cropped Wide Leg Pants

As previously mentioned thirty five times, the cropped wide leg silhouette is Kyle and my favorite for comfort combined with style and ease. You feel like you are wearing pajamas, yet look chic and on trend. That’s a style win! I have last year’s version of the Athleta Brooklyn Wide Leg Crop Pant and they feel like wearing a cloud, if that is a thing. This Zella version of “cloud pants”, as I like to call them, comes in misses and plus sizes. FYI, they run quite big if you are going to order them.

The Reset Utility Culotte, $168

Athleta Brooklyn Wide Leg Crop Pant, $89

Nic + Zoe Sweetclover Cropped Pants, $148

Apiece Apart Merida Pants, $295

Billabong Cut it Wide Leg Crop Pants, $49.95

Free People Cosmic Ways Wide Leg Pants, $108

Some women swear by the practicality of skorts. You get the movement of shorts but the look of a skirt. They’ve never been my thing because most of them are designed to look sporty. However, I would be willing to try a skort as elegant as the Lilly Pulitzer Collette Scallop Hem Skort.

Lands End Active Knit Skort, $59.95

Athleta Soho Skort, $59

Title Nine Type A Skort, $89

Jag Jeanss Hillary Pull-On Denim Skort, $69

FIG Clothing Nix Skort, $78

Laundry by Shelli Segal Cross-Front Mini Skort, $79

Lilly Pulitzer Collette Scallop Hem Skort, $84

Elliott Lauren Brush Strokes Pull On Skort, $84

Wearing a skirt almost every day was how I got through the summer sans shorts pre-kids. Skirts covered my legs to the middle of my knee (my requirement), allowed easy movement, and looked elegant. Add a top and cute sandals and I was done. Somehow with kids skirts became much harder for me. Based on my professional experience, I am not the only one. Certainly with kids, who were always lifting up my skirt at the playground, they were a no go on the weekends. And on weekdays, a dress is just so much easier to grab. However, being at home, skirts are finding their way back into my rotation. I am especially enjoying my hand-splattered jean skirt from Kyle!

Blank NYC Denim Pencil Skirt, $98

Toad&Co Earthworks Skirt, $80

Sanctuary Everyday Midi Skirt, $79

Garnet Hill Organic-Linen Godet Skirt, $99

Prana Bristol Skirt, $69

Boden Radlett Linen Wrap Skirt, $120

Marine Layer Cecille Skirt, $78

A lot of women have moved toward just wanting easy summer dresses for most days, and I don’t blame them! Dresses are “one and done,” as they say. I also find myself reaching for a dress as a default. The Lands End Women’s Cap Sleeve Surplice Wrap Maxi Dress is one of our favorite comfy but glamorous dresses of the season.

Lands End Women’s Cap Sleeve Surplice Wrap Maxi Dress, $67.99

Lands End Women’s Cap Sleeve Midi T-shirt Dress, $39.99

Emerson Fry Emerson Short Caftan, $158

Garnet Hill Linen Fringe-Hem A-Line Dress, $129

525 Cotton Tye Dye Racerback Dress $128

Marine Layer Brea Tie Front Dress, $125

I know, I know, this is an alternative to shorts blog. Why are there shorts here? If you are going to wear shorts, we always like to highlight some of our favorites of the season. Unfortunately, this season Uniqlo is not selling Kyle and my fave linen shorts from the last few years. We haven’t tried the new ones below, but let us know if you do.

Good American The Bombshell, $99

Good American The Frayed Bermuda, $139
