You know the old adage, if you wore a trend the first time around, you shouldn’t wear it the second time around? I’ve pretty much agreed with that idea while noting the recent resurgence of 90’s grunge fashion. I really agreed with it when looking at pictures from my senior year of high school at my 20th high school reunion a few weeks ago. (Yes I know, I’m dating myself!) 6 girls in a picture, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM wearing a plaid shirt. So much for individuality! I still remember my first plaid shirt. It was DKNY way back when and I got it on sale at Marshall Field’s. (Now I’m revealing my midwestern roots!) Of course I had to have the designer version.
This season a client (who was probably in college during the first grunge trip) requested a “grown-up” plaid shirt. I honestly wasn’t sure it was right for her but kept looking around, assuming if I found an “expensive enough” version, it would look “grown-up enough”. She emailed back asking if the Urban Outfitters one pictured below it was ok for her to keep as her daughter had ordered it and was not going to keep it. Heck yes, I said!
My favorite item here is the plaid backpack, which I’m hoping I could get away with as it is a perfect “mommy needs all of her hands free at all times” accessory. I first thought that I had to have the expensive version of the trend. Then Kyle found the $55 version and I think I just might have to try it! As I always say, if you are unsure of a trend, spend less first to try it out with minimal commitment. What do you think?
