My love of Marimekko was a foregone conclusion. My mother was NOT into princess pink or fluff. My twin sister and I had matching Marimekko comforters as well as a curtain my mother fashioned from a bedsheet as soon as we graduated into our bunkbeds. Very particular even then, I always loved them.
Dating back to 1951 if you can believe it, Marimekko translates from Finnish literally into Mary-dress. Amusing to me that I just found this out as my mother’s name is Mary! Although it isn’t the decor I would choose now, I have an ingrained attraction to the bold prints. The aesthetic of Marimekko was just right for the 60’s and gained popularity when worn by the likes of Jackie Kennedy. Manufacturing both textiles and ready-made product, up till now you have been able to find Marimekko in their own stores as well as the likes of Crate & Barrel and H&M.
What’s news? Target has gotten ahold of the colorful, graphic designs and gone mad. The bathing suits are out of this world cute, and affordable! I’m thinking of buying “my kids” one of the tents. Of course you can also score a Marimekko paddleboard and bocce set. What is your favorite item in the collection?
