What to Wear for Your Next Headshot

style for headshots from Real Life Style

Would you know what to wear for a headshot? Never fear; the Real Life Style headshot team is here. Not only do we have the answer to what to wear for a headshot, but we also have a stress-free opportunity for you to get yours styled by our team.

Have you had your headshot taken recently? Many women dread having their headshots taken (myself included!). While we can’t help with the pre-photoshoot jitters, we can try to solve some of the most anxiety-inducing problems when scheduling your headshots: choosing your photographer and choosing what to wear.

We would love to introduce you to our fantastic photographer, Elizabeth Dranitzke. We collaborated last fall on a headshot event for 8 of our clients and newsletter subscribers, during which we took care of styling, a hairstylist and a make-up artist provided touch-ups, and Elizabeth took care of posing and photographing. Our clients could relax, knowing that every detail would be taken care of by a professional.

The event was such a success that we would like to invite you to our next iteration! On April 7th, 2024, join the RLS team, Elizabeth Dranitzke, and Ky Washington of Clean Beauty Artists, at Bethesda boutique Flex All Day for our Portrait Pop-Up. We promise to make it pampering and playful and will have yummy refreshments to boot. Space is limited, so take the plunge soon! Send this to your bestie, mom, or work-wife, and grab your spots today!

Finding The Right Style For Headshots

1. A Structured Top

First, you’ll want to consider your silhouette. A tailored, more-fitted top will be the most flattering in photos. While we’re obviously partial to a great blazer, this could also be a sharp V-neck, a collared shirt, or even a more casual knit jacket with lapels.

Argent Stretch Wool Single Button Blazer, $395
Kobi Halperin Mila Silk Blouse, $248
Mango Flare Leg Ankle Pants, $69.99
A Stone’s Throw Pearl Necklace
Marc Fisher Zala Pumps, $160

2. Wear Your Power Color

Go bold! If your hair, skin, and eyes glow with a bright red-orange or cobalt blue, embrace the color in a jacket or top. Be sure to choose a color that looks great with your features and feels authentically you. If you feel more confident in a navy, a deep slate, a burgundy, or a forest green, a subdued color will work, too. We encourage you to consider avoiding all black :).

Mango Straight-Fit Suit Blazer, $129.99
Ted Baker London Raeven Floral Sleeveless Top, $120
Theory Cropped Kick Pant in Stretch Cotton-Blend, $235
Jenny Bird Doune Chunky Hoop Earrings, $138
Franco Sarto Racer Pointed Toe Pump, $115

3. Don’t Be Afraid of Pattern or Texture

While styling our last few headshots for clients, we found that we actually preferred the photos with a bit of pattern in the outfit. The shots with a patterned top + a solid-colored blazer looked much more dynamic and personable when compared to the shots with a solid top + solid jacket. A top or jacket with tweed, flannel, leather, or other textured fabric can be also be a terrific, unexpected way to add dimension and interest to your headshots. This is a useful strategy if you’re choosing to utilize a neutral color palette.

Nic + Zoe Cotton-Blend Grid Jacket, $218
Theory Tiny Apex Pima Cotton T-Shirt, $75
J.Crew Denim Trouser in Fiorellas Wash, $158
Brilliant Earth Silver Marquesa 36″ Strand, $350
Stuart Weitzman Soho Loafer, $495

4. Your Jewelry Can Stand Out

You want your jewelry to compliment your outfit rather than overpower or disappear. The sweet spot for jewelry lies somewhere between tiny, delicate pieces and oversized statement jewelry. Choose a necklace that lays completely over or under your shirt’s neckline, i.e. a short necklace above a V-neck or a longer necklace over a crewneck. Match your necklace to earrings that stand out against your hair, like a bigger stud or a 1″ hoop.

Club Monaco Silk Open Neck Shirt, $218
Argent Wide Leg Pants, $275
Lala Salama Imani Choker, $208
Madewell Sculptural Droplet Earrings, $46
Banana Republic Lugano Leather Belt, $80
Chocolat Blu Irene Penny Loafer Pump, $198

5. Dress Down to the Shoes!

You might only be photographed from the waist up, but you should still wear your best pants and shoes to match! Having a complete outfit will raise your confidence level. This will show in both your smile and body language in your headshots.

Now that’s a great author photo! Susannah Fox is a health and technology strategist. MIT Press recently published her book Rebel Health: A Field Guide to the Patient-Led Revolution in Medical Care.
