Do you have a color that makes you feel bold and confident? A color that you know garners you multiple compliments every time you wear it? This is a power color.
Your power color is what you should be wearing every time you need an extra boost of confidence like on a first date, going to an important meeting, or presenting in front of a group. In fact, you should always be wearing your power color when presenting to a group. People pay more attention to what you say when you wear color.
How do you figure out your power color? Try on all the colors in your closet and see which ones make your eyes sparkle and make you look like you need the least amount of makeup. Still not sure? Wear a different color every day and count the compliments. Don’t have enough in your closet? Go to the store with a friend and try on a bunch of new colors. Still not sure? Short on time? Jewel tones such as emerald green, ruby red, amethyst purple, and sapphire blue are universally flattering colors.
We’re always looking for high-quality, power color blazers for our clients, so when we discovered Argent about 3 years ago, we were beyond thrilled. Not only do they make really interesting styles and colors of suiting, but they also focus on functionality with inside pockets on jackets and credit card pockets on pants.
High powered lawyers and media personalities alike all love Nora Gardner. She makes chic, non-fussy dresses and suiting in amazing colors and flattering shapes.
Halogen is Nordstrom’s in-house label that is described as “affordable work-to-weekend,” which is exactly why we love it. Their pieces are versatile and always available in a range of colors and patterns, so it is not uncommon for us to find a great top for a client and purchase it in 3-4 colors.
Theory always makes a few fashion colors every season, which we love as either separates or a full suit. One of our clients was interviewing last year, and our favorite outfit to dress her in was her sea blue Theory suit (which we found at the outlet!).
Another more affordable brand carried at most major department stores, Vince Camuto always has a mix of great basics and fun, trendy blouses and jackets. Their faux-satin blouses are some of our and our clients’ favorites for their great colors and flattering v-necks.
J.Crew is another great place to look for fun colored sweaters, blouses, and dresses. From casual to business formal, they have options for every workplace.
Lands’ End dresses are some of our favorites for their affordability and comfort. You can often find amazing dresses for $20-$40, so we love to recommend these to clients who are in-between sizes.
Boden’s ponte collection, such as their blazers, pants, and dresses, always comes in bright, seasonal colors. They’ve started carrying the line at Nordstrom, so we’ve snagged a few pieces for our clients at the Tyson’s Corner store.
Some of our favorite places to shop for a selection of more affordable suiting are Macy’s and Lord and Taylor, where they carry Calvin Klein tops and suiting. However, we believe that when shoppers enter department stores without a clear idea on what brands they like and what they’re looking for, they will more than likely end up completely overwhelmed. Calvin Klein offers timeless and chic styles of suiting.
DKNY has very modern, sporty styles at the department stores. Their jackets and tops are always in great, sophisticated colors and patterns.
