The holidays can be loads of fun, especially for kids. Candy? Presents? Hot chocolate? A magical man who delivers them presents? Can it get any better than that? This holiday season, use gift-giving as a way to encourage the children in your life to pursue their interests, follow their passions, and be proud of who they are. After all, kids are the future.

The Budding Artist

Do you know a kid who can’t keep his or her hands off the box of crayons? Has he or she drawn on the walls once or twice? Take the holiday season as an opportunity to encourage creativity by giving your little artist a new outlet for his or her artistic energy. Maybe a new coloring book or a giant crayon made up of all the best colors? Or maybe a cute artist’s smock to protect nice clothes during the creation of the next masterpiece you will display on your fridge?

The Eager Reader

To me, there’s nothing more exciting than a child who loves to read (or be read to). This holiday season, celebrate your little one’s love for stories with a beautiful new edition of his or her favorite story. (I had the Simon & Schuster Wizard of Oz pop up book as a kid, and it was truly a work of art.) How about a stuffed toy of a favorite character, or a fun new shelf in which your reader can store his or her favorite bedtime books? After all, there’s nothing quite like a great story before bed!

The Future Rock Star

Do you know a kid who is always singing along to music in the car? Who loves to fall asleep to the soundtrack of his or her favorite movie? Who has a knack for the recorder he learned to play at school? You might have a future musician on your hands, so the holidays are a great time to for a musical instrument or a cool new T-shirt that makes him or her feel like a rock star at school. Whether he or she is the next Mozart or Bowie, a music-related gift will surely excite.

The Junior Scientist

If you’re stuck on what to get the kid who always asks, “Why?” encourage curiosity with kid-friendly science experiments, individual lab gear, or cute, plush organs that put a smiling face on explanations of how the body works. The world is still waiting for a cure for cancer or proof of life beyond Earth; so, who knows? Your junior scientist could one day be the person who solves these mysteries.

The Little Politico

Never underestimate a child’s intelligence or perceptive skills. Children pick up on everything, so it’s never too early to teach them to be inclusive and empower them to speak up for themselves and others (no one likes a bully!). A puzzle comprised of famous feminist figures or a book about a prominent civil rights figure could be great tools through which to start important conversations. Lani’s kids absolutely love reading I am Martin Luther King, Jr. by Brad Meltzer.

1. A Child’s First Book of Trump by Michael Ian Black, $17.99 $14.55 | 2. Progressive Outfitters Kids Nevertheless She Persisted Rosie the Riveter T-Shirt, $22.99 | 3. I am Martin Luther King, Jr. by Brad Meltzer, $11.99 | 4. Angelina Patterned Cotton Knee Socks with Non-Skid Bottom, $18 | 5. Paper Source Little Feminist Puzzle, $17.95 | 6. Crochet Child’s Pink Pussycat Hat, $26+ $21.10+
