The RLS Father’s Day Gift Guide 2020

It is the 2 week countdown to Father’s Day! With shipping slower than usual, we wanted to get you the Father’s Day Gift Guide as soon as possible. This year we will be celebrating with takeout instead of a meal out. However, we will also have a Father’s Day Zoom with out of town family, making the celebration larger and more festive than usual. How are you making Father’s Day special this year?

Happy Shopping!

Our Favorite Men’s Clothing

A shirt or tie from Tie Bar’s Liberty of London collection

My obsession with Liberty patterns is well documented in this blog. Mr. Real Life Style has three Liberty ties, two full-price ties from the original Liberty London store in London, the other a lower-priced version from the Liberty x Target collaboration that came out around the time we got married. Now that one can buy a selection of Liberty ties for $35, one’s obsession doesn’t need to have limits! Tie Bar also has a great selection of Liberty pocket squares.

I am soooo excited about The Tie Bar Liberty Capel Floral Short Sleeve Shirt! I think they did a really good job with offering colors to flatter most skin tones.

A cozy sweatpant/sweatshirt from Uniqlo

It can be hard to find a cotton hoodie that looks “grown-up” enough. The Uniqlo Dry Stretch Sweat Full-Zip Hoodie looks sharp and is made of a functional, technical fabric. This hoodie is a Father’s Day request from Mr. Real Life Style to match the Uniqlo Dry Stretch Sweatpants I bought him for the holidays. My point is, I’m not ruining the surprise by telling you here!

Since I purchased the sweatpants in black for my husband in December, he has barely taken them off. They are most certainly his quarantine pants! He loves them so much that he requested an extra pair. I love that they look practically designer and I don’t have to feel like he is dressed sloppily because he is in sweats. You will not be surprised to find out that Mr. Real Life Style rarely looks sloppy!

Uniqlo Dry Stretch Sweatpants, $29.90

Soft t-shirts or shorts from Marine Layer

Marine Layer is one of our favorite men’s casual brands. The clothes are totally cool, functional, and soft as all get out. They even have a size called “Marge”, a cross between a medium and a large, for the tall skinny type, that was way missing from the market.

Marine Layer Rosarito Pocket Tee, $45

Marine Layer Yoga Short, $72

Marine Layer Koloa Button Down, $88

Technical clothing perfect for summer from Rhone

Rhone is one of those brands I’ve been silently stalking for years. I have devoured every catalog I’ve received in the mail, watching the line develop, waiting until my clientele and the brand catch up to each other. I think we are finally there. This brand is quarantine itself. Every man should be wearing their performance clothing that looks like business casual wear.

Rhone Notch Performance Pique Tee, $78

Rhone 11″ Commuter Short $88

Rhone Commuter Pant, $128

Shoes for working from home

Yes, it sometimes feels silly to wear shoes at home. However, after almost 3 months at home, a lot of us need the support. How about buying this retro-cool Nike Air Tailwind Sneaker as your “indoor sneaker”?

Sometimes you just want cozy, especially when you have to get up at 5:30am to get some work done before the kids get up. Makes it easier to walk on the cold hard wood floors in these faux-fleece lined puppies. They also have a treaded bottom so he won’t slip before he drinks his coffee!

The EVA Arizona Birkenstocks are hands-down one of the best gifts I’ve ever bought Mr. Real Life Style. It took a few tries to get the size right (his feet are hard to size), but they are now among his most worn shoes. Can’t get your man out of flip-flops or sport slides? The comfort and lightness of the EVA Birkenstocks will convert him, I promise.

Minnetonka Taylor Slipper, $49.95

Birkenstock EVA Arizona Sandal, $44.95

Tech and Gadgets

Fancy noise canceling headphones for trying to get work done with the kids home

We could not live without noise-cancelling headphones in our house. I joke that Max (8) now thinks our Bose headphones are his. The whole family gets use out of them. Being able to block out the rest of the family, whether working or trying to watch something for pleasure, is pretty much priceless right now. Just a warning though, these will become family property!

Bose QuietComfort 35 Wireless Over-Ear Headphones II with Google Assistant, $349

A blue-tooth speaker for hanging out on the patio this summer

What is it with men and their Bluetooth speakers? I don’t know exactly but this one is totally adorable and I love that it is also a radio.

Lexon Tykho 3 FM Radio & Bluetooth Speaker, $59.99

A wireless charger so he won’t conveniently forget to plug his phone in

And why are their phones always dead? We haven’t moved to wireless chargers yet in my house, have you? This one looks so cool and would match any decor without screaming, “I’m technology!”

Native Union Dock Wireless Charger, $79.99

An online service perfect for your story-telling father, so you won’t have to hear the same story for the 100th time!

Storyworth emails your loved one a prompt each week. After they fill it out, Storyworth will then send it to everyone in the family who signed up to receive updates. At the end of the service, it compiles these stories into a printed book! Kyle’s father received this gift at least a year ago (if not longer), and has enjoyed it so much that he has gone off the prompts to write his entire life story. During quarantine he has been writing more than 5 a week! What an incredible gift.

Storyworth Subscription, $89

Food and Drinks

A high-tech beer koozie that fits all sizes

We are going to spend a lot of time in our backyards this summer. Keep your brew cool with the BrüMate Hopsulator. It has a lid and works with both 12 and 16 oz cans. I might need one of these myself now that I’ve gotten into drinking all of these cool artisinal ciders out of cans! Come to think of it, this would also be useful to support his sparking water can habit. (Kyle’s fiance has this and approves!)

BrüMate Hopsulator 3-in-1 Trio Can Cooler Set, $24.99

An upgrade from his Igloo cooler he’s had since the 90s

I predict that socially distanced picnics are going to be BIG this summer. Help him out with a fresh, functional cooler. This large Coleman Cooler keeps ice for up to 4 day in 90 degree heat and can fit enough food to get you through the 12 hour drive to your summer vacation.

Coleman Cooler, $80.21-129.99

A pour-over machine for the coffee-snob

It is really the little things keeping us going right now, isn’t it? The perfect cup of coffee is really a must these days. He will enjoy his (and maybe even share!) with this gorgeous pour over set, the only way the purists will brew their freshly roasted coffee beans.

Fellow Stagg XF Pour Over Coffeemaker Set, $99

…Which you can even pair with a coffee subscription!

Speaking of freshly roasted coffee beans…Make the gift of the perfect cup of coffee last six months and make bets on which will last longer, the coffee subscription or quarantine? Will the kids be back in school by the time he gets his last delivery? You can make it a game!

Atlas Coffee Club 6 Month Gift Subscription, $99

Take-out dinner and drinks from one of DC’s black-owned restaurants

DC is known for being diverse but also very segregated in many ways. Support a Black-Owned DMV Restaurant with a gift certificate for takeout or order for your Father’s Day celebration.

American Tall is a great source of clothing for the tall (like up to 7+ feet tall) skinny guy!

My tall husband always looked sloppy because to get a t-shirt that hung below his waist, or a long-sleeved shirt that didn’t stop well above his wrists he had to wear an XL or a XXL, which was way too big for his medium frame. American Tall was a game changer for the way he dresses.

They were also our go-to the year my oldest my son was 13. He shot up to 6’2 but still weighed 125 pounds – amazingly, American Tall makes clothes that fit him even before he filled out a bit.

Pretty sure the clothes are made in the USA. Their customer service has been great, too, though I think they may make you pay shipping on returns. I don’t have any connection to the company except that I’m really grateful that they make clothes that fit the men I love, and I want them to succeed so I can keep buying from them!
