An Enchanting Harry Potter Nursery

Hi, I’m Sloane, the newest Real Life Style team member. Some of you have met me in person by this point. For those who mostly follow us online, I started with Lani and Kyle a little over a year ago and welcomed my first child, baby girl Jamison (James), in 2024. After seeing the photos of my Harry Potter-themed nursery, Lani insisted I share my creation with the community! So here it is, a specially curated nursery inspired by the “Noble and Most Ancient House of Black.” [1]

Room Inspiration

When my husband and I found out we were expecting our first baby, there was no discussion about the nursery theme. The only question was, how far were we going to take it? I wanted the nursery to feel like I was walking into a place in the books, not an arrangement of Harry Potter accessories you can find everywhere. Being the Slytherin I am, when I saw this incredible (and, yes, somewhat dark) Black Family Tapestry Wallpaper, I knew I had to use it.

The gorgeous colors in the wallpaper created the perfect backdrop for the $25 Victorian dresser I’ve been hauling from place to place for the past 12 years. Most items in her room (dresser, sconces, mirror, side table, picture frames, candlesticks, chest, clock, etc) were thrifted or found at an antique store. But my favorite part of the room is the Jamison family crest my mom uncovered in my grandmother’s basement after the baby was born. It hangs over her rocker. Her family namesake.

The Details

I spent hours combing through rummage sales, browsing Etsy, and trolling online sales to find all the perfect details for her room. My husband was (not) thrilled when I asked him to drive 45 minutes to pick up a steamer trunk and turn it into a toy chest/bookshelf for under the window. But he nailed it! He will love it when I ask him to build a house elf door for Kreacher next. (Lani is most excited about this project!)

Some creative friends gifted us items like the gold-handled umbrella and the fun owl decorations. I even had a friend who custom-made the toddler-sized Harry Potter robes and crocheted the Sorting Hat as a gift for Jamison. Please help me convince her to start her own Etsy shop! They’re so cute!

Nursery Essentials

As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t thrift everything for the room! We needed some nursery essentials that blended in as much as possible. Check out some of our favorite nursery products below! Have a question about something you saw that I didn’t mention? Leave a comment; I’m sure the piece has a story!
