When Lani and I convened on Tuesday morning to discuss the 2016 Met Ball, we had differing opinions. She remarked that the red carpet was not that exciting. I knew that she just hadn’t seen the real show-stoppers amidst the tons of media coverage for the most popular celebrities.
As usual, millennial-favorites Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner won the hearts of the press for their outfits. I did love Taylor Swift’s custom Louis Vuitton dress (but I loved the mani by Miss Lady Finger more), but I wasn’t sure about wearing a mini dress to host the Met Gala. Kylie’s Balmain dress was nothing new from the Kardashian family. Oh, silver embellishment and nothing left for the imagination? Yawn.
This year’s theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, and my favorite outfits truly took this theme to heart. Here’s my list of the best dressed at the Met Gala. Agree? Disagree? Let us know!

Taking the theme to the next level
Zac Posen posted the below photo on Instagram and my heart fluttered. Claire Danes dress looks like an ordinary Cinderella-style ballgown on in the flash photography, but the dress was actually made of fiber optic woven organza with 30 mini battery packs sewn in. The gown required 600 hours of work from Zac Posen and his team, but it was definitely worth it. Read more about the gorgeous dress here.

Karolina Kurkova also wore technology in her dress with her gown created by Marchesa and IBM. The floral embellishments on the dress were paired with LED lights that changed color depending what people were saying about the Met Gala on social media. Watch the videos on her Instagram page to see the dress in action.

Long Live Alessandro Michele
We love Gucci. How many more times are we going to say it? If you haven’t heard us gush about Gucci designer Alessandro Michele yet, be sure to check out our blog post from earlier this season. Do you remember Florence Welch’s gown from the Grammy’s? Here is part two, which is somehow even more gorgeous.

The bold and beautiful risk takers
My favorite look at the Oscars was Naomi Watts peacock-colored dress. My favorite look at the Grammy’s was Kacey Musgrave’s peacock-colored dress. So it makes sense that Zoe Saldana’s peacock-inspired rainbow feather dress ended up being my favorite at the Met Ball.

Zoe Saldana in Dolce & Gabbana. How amazing is that train?

Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein Collection. In my opinion, Lupita is the most perfect person on the planet and can do no wrong. She is definitely the only person who can wear her hair in a vertical up-do and have me thinking, “STUNNING!”
A cape can be your best accessory
Lani and I are suckers for anything with stars and planets on it. That’s why I instantly fell in love with Nicole Kidman’s Alexander McQueen gown and cape.

Mackenzie Davis in Altuzarra. The cape is what really makes this outfit spectacular.

Pants on the red carpet
Emma Watson is no stranger to black-tie pant suits. Her Calvin Klein outfit didn’t immediately blow me off my feet, but I love the fact that it was made entirely from reused plastics. The look was composed of 5 different pieces that she plains to wear over and over again.

Proving that the lingerie trend works for some…
When we said the lingerie look was a trend for spring, our readers flipped out. Well, the truth is that the only people wearing the look and really pulling it off are under 25.
.
Lorde in Valentino. The top part of the dress was a little naked for my taste, but the rainbow tutu on the bottom was beautiful.
.
.
Selena Gomez in Louis Vuitton. She may have been born in 1992, but she pulls off the 90s look with combat boots and a slip dress.
Louis Vuitton’s short and sweet
As I stated before regarding Taylor Swift, I loved Louis Vuitton’s short dresses but maybe not for one of the Met Ball’s hosts. On the other hand, she got a lot of media coverage for this daring look, so Nicolas Ghesquire seems to have gotten the job done!

Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton. Did you hear that she is going to be the next Lara Croft?
