The Met Gala 2019: Notes on Camp

Full disclosure: this is only half of the outfits we wanted to show you! The Met Gala’s theme this year was Camp: Notes on Fashion, which meant celebrities donned the most color, sparkle, feathers, and volume they possibly could in their outfits. We could have gone on for pages but one, we know you have other things to do, and two, unfortunately, so do we! Hope you enjoy the annual RLS edit of the biggest fashion party of the year.

The Event Co-Chairs

Every year, Anna Wintour selects a few public figures to serve as her co-hosts for the event. This year, she chose Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele (Gucci’s creative director), Harry Styles, and Serena Williams.

Lady Gaga was obviously one of the most talked about looks, as she changed into FOUR different outfits ON the pink carpet, all while performing a 15-minute long show for the spectators. Brandon Maxwell, the designer of the looks, and her actual hair and makeup team accompanied her for her performance. Below are my two favorite looks, but the whole scene is worth reading about.

We both loved Serena Williams, but Kyle especially loved her hidden footwear choice, a pair of Nike x Off-White Air Force Ones.

What did you guys think of Harry Styles look? It reminded us of the blog post we wrote a few years ago about the Gucci men’s collection.

Gucci Goodness

With Alessandro Michele as one of the hosts, and the theme perfectly coordinating with Gucci’s whole brand, it makes sense that some of the best outfits of the night would be from Gucci. Florence Welch’s bird cape with lavender lining is basically Lani’s dream outfit.

Saoirse Ronan’s dragon shouldered look was one of Kyle’s favorite looks of the night.

This is amazing. Jared Leto, one of Gucci’s campaign faces, wore an epic Gucci runway look complete with his severed head as an accessory. I’m also so glad that the head photobombed this picture of Jeff Bezos and Kim Kardashian.

Glittery Gods and Goddesses

Billy Porter had one of the most talked about arrivals, as he was carried in by six shirtless men. He wore an amazing ancient-Egypt-inspired Sun God outfit. The process of getting ready was captured by Vogue and I highly recommend watching the video just to see the details on this outfit.

Celine Dion looked amazing in an Oscar De La Renta Bodysuit and Noel Stewart headpiece. Again, I highly recommend checking out the detailed shots of her insane diamond earrings and the beaded sleeves.

J.Lo just doesn’t age. How is this woman almost 50 years old?!

Gabrielle Union looked glamorous with leather gloves and a coordinating draped jacket over her shoulders.

Gigi Hadid’s look really went from head-to-toe, with a sequined catsuit and matching headpiece and boots.

Designer Costumes

Caroline Trentini gets James’ (Lani’s 5 year old son) vote for best outfit of the night. Trendsetter that he is, he wore one just like it for Halloween this year.

Kacey Musgraves’ Barbie moment looked so natural for her, especially the hair-dryer purse. Mattel created a matching Jeremy Scott designed Barbie Doll in record time, which then sold out IMMEDIATELY.

Rainbows Galore

Lupita has never shied away from a dramatic red carpet moment. Kyle especially loved the glittery drag makeup.

Nichapat Suphap is an editor for Vogue Thailand and she went for a complete rainbow princess fantasy look.

Lana Condor gave a whole new meaning to the word cupcake dress.

A billowing lilac princess dress? Obviously this was an RLS favorite.

Ruffles and tiers and bows galore, Rachel Brosnahan’s Erdem dress was over-the-top and totally gorgeous.

Minty Fresh

Two of our favorite outfits of the night just happened to be in mint green. Madelaine Petsch wore a totally delicate yet dramatic dress with matching shoes.

Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys had the best couples outfit of the night. We loved her graceful hood and unexpected color!

Three Dimensional

I highly recommend watching the Met Gala videos on Zac Posen’s Instagram stories. My favorite of his dresses was worn by Jourdan Dunn. She looked so graceful and poised.

Ryan Murphy’s pearl encrusted cape weighed over 100 lbs. That is serious outfit dedication. LOVE the drama.

Sofia Sanchez wore a mango-inspired dress as a nod to the brand Mango, of which she is an ambassador. It will even be available to purchase on June 3rd at Mango’s flagship in New York. It is actually quite fabulous and wearable!
