The Met Gala 2019: Notes on Camp

Full disclosure: this is only half of the outfits we wanted to show you! The Met Gala’s theme this year was Camp: Notes on Fashion, which meant celebrities donned the most color, sparkle, feathers, and volume they possibly could in their outfits. We could have gone on for pages but one, we know you have other things to do, and two, unfortunately, so do we! Hope you enjoy the annual RLS edit of the biggest fashion party of the year. . . The Event Co-Chairs Every year, Anna Wintour selects a few public figures to serve as her co-hosts for …

Heavenly Fashion at the 2018 Met Gala

After hearing the announcement for this year’s costume exhibit, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” I instantly wondered what would be worn on the Met Gala red carpet. I knew we’d see many Madonna-inspired looks from Versace and Dolce and Gabbana. But would there be as much nakedness as there has been the past few years? I mean, last year Kendall Jenner wore La Perla lingerie to the party. Avant Garde at the Met Gala

“Just how many celebrities have the guts to wear Comme des Garçons on the red carpet?” I’m stealing that opening line from the Women’s Wear Daily coverage on the Met Ball because it was the same question I had before getting a peak at the looks Tuesday morning. This year’s Met exhibit from The Costume Institute honors Rei Kawakubo, the founder and designer of Comme des Garçons. This is only the second exhibition that covers only one living designer’s work, the last being Yves Saint Laurent in 1983. The Met Gala is the annual fundraising event for The Costume Institute, and …

Fashion Meets Technology at the 2016 Met Gala

When Lani and I convened on Tuesday morning to discuss the 2016 Met Ball, we had differing opinions. She remarked that the red carpet was not that exciting. I knew that she just hadn’t seen the real show-stoppers amidst the tons of media coverage for the most popular celebrities. As usual, millennial-favorites Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner won the hearts of the press for their outfits. I did love Taylor Swift’s custom Louis Vuitton dress (but I loved the mani by Miss Lady Finger more), but I wasn’t sure about wearing a mini dress to host the Met Gala. Kylie’s …

Would you Dare to Wear Punk on Fifth Avenue? The Met Ball 2013

On May 6th, celebrities, designers, politicians gathered for the 2013 Costume Institute Gala at the Met in New York. The event is known for attracting some of the most fashionable guests each year in beautiful, over-the-top outfits. This year at the Met Ball, party goers donned safety pins, leather, spiked hair, and fishnets to celebrate the opening of the new exhibit, “Punk: Chaos to Couture.” This exhibition showcases punk from its birth in the 1970s to its influence on today’s fashions. The guests this year decided to truly take a risk; some were more rewarding than others. Here are some …
