Spring 2019 Trends Volume 4: Sophisticated Sport

Do you remember when cargo pants were truly new and exciting? Before they became the domain of sloppy dads? I do and I did love them as something cool and comfy to wear on the weekend or on a long fashion shoot. Some fashion stylists in New York took the look too far though, like when my salesperson at Armani complained about the other stylists (unlike the ones from my company) who showed up to pull at the store dressed inappropriately in their cargo pants. But I digress. Here you go. Cargo pants are back! But they are different this time because isn’t the trend always different?! This time the cargo trend is much dressier so you don’t have to be embarrassed when you show up to shop the Armani store on Madison Avenue. Got it?

A very stylish friend asked me over lunch a few weeks ago which sandal she should be buying this summer to replace all of her worn out Birkenstocks. My answer is the lug-sole sandal. Before I went shoe shopping with a client this week I was thinking, “but I don’t feel like buying new sandals this year if i don’t need them. Why should I be such a slave to the latest style of orthopedic shoe fashion? Maybe I should just put feathers on my Tevas from a few years ago to make them new and trendy?” Yes, I was going down a rabbit hole of negative sandal talk. But again, I digress. As I said, I went shoe shopping with a client and everything changed. There are some really cute lug-soled sandals out there and never mind cute, they are comfortable as all get out! Stay tuned to this year’s comfortable shoe blog for some of our favorite finds. The best thing about the platform and lug-sole trend is that it can be a little more dressed up than a Teva or a Birkenstock.

I made a crack the other day about Demi Moore wearing bike shorts to the Oscars. The person looked at me blankly and I was like, “OMG, I’m sooo old.” I can’t even fathom how and why someone would ever want to make bike shorts a trend again. This is my segue to let Kyle take over this section!

Kyle: I know it’s an unpopular opinion to like bike shorts, but I’m honestly not mad at the trend. I’m sorry! But considering millennials have literally rehashed every other 90s trend, including scrunchies, Doc Martins, jelly sandals, and fanny packs, it was only a matter of time that bike shorts came back in style. I agree with the WWD article that says, “it could go wrong really quickly.” But we already have all the cool blouses to go with leather leggings, why not leather bike shorts? And here’s where I make fashion mistakes that I regret in 5-10 years!
