Greenery. Pantone describes the color as “refreshing and revitalizing,” “a life-affirming shade,” “illustrative of flourishing foliage,” and “nature’s neutral.” The color of the year is a symbolic selection that serves as an expression of our current global culture. This year, Pantone explains that “greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose. The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world.”
I love that this yellow-green shade is bright, uplifting, and positive; it’s a welcome transition from last year’s mellow icy colors. While this particular shade of green is slightly jarring to wear, it’s similar to and mixes well with olive and military green. Funny story! Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele has embraced green in his collections for spring (check out our post to see/try to understand his androgynous aesthetic). The first look to go down his spring 2017 men’s show was this double breasted green trench over a ruffled blouse with pink shorts and knee-high socks . I immediately thought, “wow that looks SO strange.”

But there was one person in the crowd who was totally digging the look…

And that person was Jared Leto. Who then totally rocked the look at the Suicide Squad premiere. How hilarious is that!? Of course, he is the new face of the Gucci campaigns.

Beyond Pantone’s choice of color, I think 2017 is going to be a real movement back to brights. Minimalism has been big during this decade, but something about this year’s spring runway felt different. Take a look at Balenciaga’s creepily exaggerated runway show. Ignoring some of the crazy silhouettes, I love the bold orange, purple and pink colors. And while I acknowledging that spring shows typically bring more color than fall shows, Harper’s Bazaar listed bright pink as a spring trend and Elle listed yellow.
