It’s time to pull that criminally underrated piece out of the back of your closet: the vest. In the spring and summer, put-together outfits can be a little more difficult to create. You probably don’t feel like wearing your third piece when it’s over 90 degrees. However, a tailored vest can work all the magic of a blazer but still be breezy and practical. As seen in the runway shots above, many designers created gorgeous longer vests, but there were plenty of cropped vests and hip-length vests as well. This is a major trend this season ladies, so take note!
Here are the three types of vests from the spring runways:
.
1. The Vest Dress
Part vest, part dress. It sounds complicated, but it can actually be one of the easiest pieces in your wardrobe. Simply throw the super chic topper over a basic sleeveless dress or the new cropped, wide-leg pant. Add fun earrings and you’re done! I have two chic black sleeveless cotton maxi dresses from H&M that I plan to wear with vests at least once a week this summer.

2. The Sleeveless Blazer
All the slimming benefits of a blazer with none of the stiffness. The beauty of the vest as a third piece is that you can keep it super simple underneath. And no, I am not advocating crop tops; I just liked the pink vest in the picture.

3. The Little Cropped Vest
The perfect cropped vest adds structure and interest to the top half, hitting you right at the smallest part of your body. This silhouette works with pants, skirts and dresses. I just picked up a grey linen Helmut Lang version that I can’t wait to experiment with!

This one is a bonus. I spied this Tahari vest in the Neiman Marcus catalog and fell in love. Leather over chiffon, need I say more? Love!
